For over 30 years, FELDSPAR jazz trio has been playing a variety of jazz, Latin-jazz, blues ballads or their own unique renditions of popular tunes. The members of FELDSPAR jazz each came to this trio with a significant amount of experience, having played in a variety of bands; from rock to big band. John, Al and Scott also played as the rhythm section to notable local pianist, Hob Mason. In 1988 with one brief moment of semi-lucid inspiration, Sjolinder founded and named this trio after the mineral of the same name that he studied in a college geology class. FELDSPAR jazz plays a variety of jazz ‘feels’ with their own unique spins. They play traditional blues, be-bop, smooth, contemporary, and Latin jazz. FELDSPAR jazz is frequently used as the core accompanying rhythm section for guest artists and often performs together as part of larger bands.
Drummer- Scott Bell, continues to play for many bands in the North Iowa area with styles ranging from Rock, Dixieland, Classical, Celtic Folk and even polka’s. Bell is also a piano tuner/technician and band instrument repair technician.
Bassist- Alan Haight has an extensive musical history including being classically trained on the acoustic bass. Haight has performed with a variety of bands for over 30 years with styles ranging from R&B to traditional big band. He performs actively in the North Central Iowa area with several jazz groups. Haight is a retired media technician.
Guitarist and founding member, John Sjolinder has played both guitar and bass with area bands for the past 30+ years. Sjolinder also sings and has been known to vocalize one of his signature renditions of “It’s Only a Paper Moon”. His accomplishments include original compositions, studio recordings, and being the featured soloist for various concerts. Sjolinder is Quality Control Manager with Woodharbor Custom Cabinetry.
